Buying a parrot for your pet is not a decision that should be taken lightly. A pet parrot should never be an impulse purchase. A parrot has certain needs and requirements that may not make it the ideal pet for everyone.
When you buy a dog, you know you will have to feed and water it and also exercise it. This can be easy, as you or you and/or someone else can plan for a long evening walk each day with your dog. The same cannot be said for a parrot.
In the wild, a pet bird would spend hours finding and foraging for food, preening and socializing in its flock, and most especially will be looking out for that perfect mate.
Yes birds search for their perfect mate. And it isn’t always based on looks. Lord only knows what they base their avian longings upon.
Before buying a parrot, you should do as much research as possible on all the breeds that are available in your area. This is especially important if you….. have never owned a bird before. A parrot is not the type of pet you can stick in a cage and leave alone. A parrot must, and we cannot stress this enough, have time out of the cage and have time to spend with its “flock.” You and your family are your parrot’s flock now, and your bird will look to you for socialization, preening, food, entertainment, not to mention love.
When you have read about all the attributes and characteristic each bird possess, now it is time to decide which parrot is right for you and your family. If you do have a family, it will be important for your bird to spend quality time with each member of the family to be properly socialized. Remember, a bird that is happy to step up to anyone is a happy bird. You should always have two or three different types of birds in mind so you are not restricted to just one kind.
